Boise State University
Area and Climate
Boise State University is located on a central campus on the banks of
the Boise River. The city of Boise, capital of Idaho, is one of two metropolitan
areas in the state. Approximately 500,000 people live in the Boise Metropolitan
Area. Boise offers a wide variety of cultural events, museums, restaurants,
and other urban amenities. Parks along the Boise River and surrounding
forests, mountains and desert provide natural beauty and allow residents
to pursue a wide range of recreational activities. The area enjoys a mild,
dry climate with 234 days of sunshine per year.
Education
Boise State University was founded in 1932 and today is Idaho's largest
university with 18,000 students. The University offers bachelors, masters,
and doctoral studies across more than 180 academic program options in
eight colleges: Applied Technology, Arts and Sciences, Business and Economics,
Education, Engineering, Extended Studies, Health Sciences, and Social
Sciences and Public Affairs.
Campus Life
The student population at Boise State University reflects the diversity
of Idaho, the United States, and the world. Students come from a wide
variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds, including 300 international
students from 61 countries. There are four residence halls on campus and
additional housing is available for students with families in university
apartments. Other campus facilities include a new student recreation center
with a comprehensive fitness and recreation program, an outdoor recreation
program, and a large events center used for athletic events, concerts,
and entertainment. There are a number of student associations in which
all students may participate, including an International Student Association,
which organizes cultural and recreational activities.
For International Students
The International Student Advisor in the International Programs Office
(IPO) advises international students regarding immigration, cultural,
and academic issues. She also serves as an advocate for international
students within the university community. The IPO assists students with
their arrival in Boise and conducts an orientation to acquaint students
with the university, city, academics in the U.S., and American culture
prior to the beginning of the semester. The campus has a health center
offering comprehensive medical services. Boise State University offers
an excellent ESL program for students to improve their English language
skills, if needed. International students with a TOEFL score of at least
450 (paper-based) or 133 (computer-based) may be granted conditional admission,
but they must enroll in the university's Intensive English Program. A
number of tuition waivers and scholarships are available.
Idaho State University
Education
Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho, is a fully accredited,
public university enrolling 13,210 students from 47 states and 62 foreign
countries. In spring of 2003, it hosted 326 international students as
compared to 133 international students in 1998. The university offers
270 programs in 7 colleges (faculties) and grants a full range of degrees
from associate to doctorate level.
ISU offers many strong programs, among them Accounting (ranked in top 1% for CPA pass rate) Health Physics, Physics, Math, Engineering, Education, Chemistry, CIS, CS, Computer Software Engineering Technology, MBA, Psychology, Counseling, Biology, and Pre-medical Studies.
Area and Climate
Located in a beautiful mountain valley 264 km north of Salt Lake City,
Utah, it provides a safe, supportive environment and affordable, solid
education for its students.
Campus Life
On-campus housing for international students is guaranteed. Free airport
pick-up in Pocatello and a comprehensive 2 day orientation as well as
free ESL tutoring, and caring and individualized academic, personal, and
immigration counseling by ISU's international team make ISU an ideal choice
for students from around the world. Furthermore a wide variety of international
student clubs is active on campus as is a People to People Ambassador
program, which helps students meet community members on a social basis.
International Students
A limited number of non-resident fee waiver scholarships, especially in
technical fields, are available to international students.
Application priority deadlines are June 1 for fall semester and Nov. 1 for spring semester. TOEFL reqirements 500(173) for undergraduate and 550 (213) for graduate students. IELTS also accepted.
Lewis-Clark
State College
Education
Lewis-Clark State College (LCSC) was founded in 1893. It is an accredited
four-year state institution that enrolls 3,000 students, with approximately
100 international students.
Programs include business, computer science, communications, pre-engineering, nursing, social work and criminal justice. LCSC also offers two- and four-year technical programs such as information systems analysis, computer aided drafting, graphic arts, hotel and restaurant management, electronics and manufacturing maintenance technology.
The college considers teaching more important than research, giving instructors more time to devote to classes. Students receive personalized attention and there are an average of only 15 students per class.
Campus Life
LCSC's beautiful campus is located in a safe, quiet residential area.
The library has a collection of over 200,000 volumes and has access to
more than 500,000 items through the Valley Automated Library Network.
The newly renovated Student Union Building contains lounges, a food court,
game rooms and computer labs. The college offers intercollegiate baseball,
basketball, volleyball and tennis and a variety of intramurals including
aerobics, chess, martial arts, snowboarding, soccer and whitewater rafting.
LCSC has on-campus housing for approximately 250 students. Flexible meal plans are available for students in the two larger residence halls. Cooperative living houses or apartment complexes have kitchen facilities.
Area and Climate
LCSC is located in the city of Lewiston, Idaho, which together with its
twin city, Clarkston, Washington has a population of approximately 50,000.
Seattle, Washington is an hour away by plane. With its mild climate and
beautiful scenery, Lewiston offers year-round recreation. Our students
can find all the beauty and majesty for which the American west is famous.
International Students
Applications are accepted year-round, but international students should
try to submit applications by June 1 for fall semester and October 1 for
spring semester. Scholarships for international students are limited and
are based on field of study and merit.
To apply, international students must submit a completed international student application, US$45 application fee and a TOEFL score of at least 500 (paper) or 173 (computer). Students whose English skills do not meet these standards may be admitted on the condition that they study at the college's Institute of Intensive English (IIE) until they either pass the TOEFL or satisfactorily complete the IIE's highest level. IIE also welcomes students who are not college bound but wish to improve their English.
New international students receive free airport pick up, an orientation and student handbook For college students, the International Student Services Coordinator provides information and assistance on college programs, immigration requirements and cultural adjustment. The Director of the IIE provides similar counseling for IIE students. For college students, four tutoring centers assist in writing, math, communications and LCSC's core classes. Homestay is available for a placement fee.
University
of Idaho
Area and Climate
The 800-acre University of Idaho (UI) main campus is located in Moscow,
Idaho. Moscow is a friendly, safe town of about 20,000 that offers many
amenities of city life, such as galleries, theaters, symphonies, and sporting
events. Summers (May through September) are generally dry with temperatures
that range from 10° to 32°C, which is perfect for water sports on nearby
lakes or wild rivers or UI's eighteen-hole golf course. Winters (December
through March) are ideal for skiing, sledding, and snowboarding on nearby
slopes. Spring rains make the rolling hills of the Palouse varying shades
of green-a beautiful contrast to the colorful, warm fall months (September
through November).
Education
The University of Idaho is a publicly supported, comprehensive educational
institution. Students choose from more than 154 undergraduate majors and
135 graduate degree programs in one of nine colleges: Agriculture and
Life Sciences, Art and Architecture, Business and Economics, Education,
Engineering and Computer Science, Law, Letters and Science, Mines and
Earth Resources, and Natural Resources. In addition, the College of Law
offers a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree. Affordable tuition and fees, coupled
with academic excellence, account for UI's high ratings in publications
such as Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine,®MDIT¯ America's 100
Best College Buys, and U.S. News & World Report. Yahoo! Internet Life
magazine ranks UI twelfth among the nation's most wired campuses.
Campus Life
The University of Idaho offers a total living and learning environment.
A wide variety of on-campus housing facilities are available for individuals,
graduate students, married couples, and families. UI student government
supports campus organizations for almost every interest, including sports,
cross-cultural activities, theater, art, and music. Each year, the world-famous
Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival brings jazz musicians from around the world
to Moscow to perform and share their knowledge with students. Idaho has
a proud tradition and strong program in fifteen sports for men and women.
In February 2002, a state-of-the-art recreation center is scheduled to
open for student use and features the highest climbing wall in the western
U.S.
International Students
The International Programs Office facilitates activities and serves UI's
rapidly growing international student population. Services include new
student orientation and cross-cultural and immigration counseling. The
American Language and Culture Program (ALCP) offers six levels of intensive
English instruction in five 8-week sessions annually. Eligible applicants
can receive deferred admission until the required English proficiency
is attained through ALCP. Through concurrent enrollment, eligible Level
5 students can take degree course work while studying intensive English
at ALCP. Successful completion of Level 5 substitutes for the UI TOEFL
minimum of 525 on the paper-based version or 193 on the computer-based
version. Support programs include friendship families and free bike loans.
Each February, a large international festival is held to highlight the
many countries and cultures that are represented at UI.
College
of Southern Idaho
Education
The College of Southern Idaho is a 2-year community college that was established
in 1965. Presently, the college annually serves over 12,000 students in
a wide range of majors. The student body is represented by students from
31 states and 20 countries. CSI is the perfect size with small classes,
caring instructors, and friendly people. CSI also offers many opportunities
for students to get involved in outdoor activities, intramural sports,
clubs, student government, and much more.
Area and Climate
The College of Southern Idaho is located in Twin Falls, Idaho, the county
seat of Twin Falls County and the cultural and trade center of south central
Idaho's Magic Valley. Twin Falls has a population of approximately 35,000
people.
Campus Life
The beautifully landscaped campus contains over 18 buildings located on
350 acres in Twin Falls, Idaho. Inclusive of these buildings is a state
of the art planetarium that is ranked among one of the best in the world.
The College of Southern Idaho has a dormitory facility to accommodate
142 men and 104 women. The facility contains an activity center, computer
lab, game room and laundry facilities.
International Students
For Fall 2000: 40 international students applied, 20 were accepted,
18 enrolled. Students can start in fall or spring.
Application Deadline: Rolling. Transfers accepted from institutions
abroad.
Services: International student adviser on campus. Part-time ESL program
on campus. ESL program available during the academic year.
North
Idaho College
Education
Founded in 1933, North Idaho College is a comprehensive community college
located on the spectacular shores of Lake Coeur d'Alene and the Spokane
River. Quality instruction, small classes, and a caring, talented faculty
and staff are the driving forces behind NIC's success.
NIC offers associate degrees in more than 35 transferable academic majors and technical certificates or associate of applied science degrees in 26 professional-technical programs. Approximately 4,100 students are enrolled in credit courses with classes averaging 15-20 students.
Area and Climate
NIC's main campus is located in Coeur d'Alene, a destination resort town,
which lies in the four-season beauty of North Idaho's famous recreation
area. An abundance of outdoor activities are available including mountain
biking, boating, fishing, hunting, backpacking, hiking, camping, swimming,
snowboarding, and skiing.
Campus Life
The campus lies in the city limits of Coeur d'Alene, a 100-year-old city
with a growing population of 35,000 residents with approximately 130,000
residents in Kootenai County. Cultural and social activities abound in
this lakeside city, well-supplemented by the resources of nearby Spokane,
Washington, a metropolitan area of 406,000.
Albertson College of Idaho
Education
Albertson College welcomes students from all over the world with diverse
backgrounds, religions, languages and ethnicities. The college administration
is committed to increasing the numbers of international students through
additional funding and services.
For International Students English Language
Requirement
International students whose native language is not English, in addition
to the appropriate application procedure stated previously, are required
to submit a score of at least 550 on the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign
Language).
International students will also be requested to submit a writing sample to the English Department for evaluation prior to enrollment in English 101. The students must provide evidence of adequate financial resources before Form I-20 will be issued. Students who fail to meet the English language requirement may enroll in an ESL Language Center at another institution.
Proficiency certification by ESL meets the English language requirement for admission. Because of laws and regulations involving international students, the college encourages early applications.
Northwest Nazarene University
Education
Northwest Nazarene University (NNU) is a Christian liberal arts university
committed to the education of the whole person, a dynamic process that
engages students in both the pursuit of academic excellence and exploration
of Christian faith. The essential mission of the University is the

Area and Climate
Northwest Nazarene University is located in Nampa, Idaho (population 52,000),
which provides a safe, small-town atmosphere. Additionally, NNU
is just minutes away from Boise, Idaho's capital city, and the advantages
of a large urban area. The Boise Valley supports a number of music
and cultural groups such as Ballet Idaho, the Boise Philharmonic, and
the Idaho Shakespeare Festival.
NNU's unique location between the desert and the mountains provides easy
access to skiing, hiking, hunting, fishing, rock climbing, white-water
rafting, and just about any outdoor sport imaginable.
