Four-Year Art and Design College in Atlanta and Savannah (Georgia) and Lacoste (France)
The Savannah College of Art and Design exists to prepare talented students for careers in the visual and performing arts, design, the building arts and the history of art and architecture. The college emphasizes learning through individual attention in a positively oriented environment. It is a private, non-profit, accredited college awarding Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Architecture, Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts and Master of Urban Design degrees, and certificates. The college has locations in Atlanta and Savannah, Georgia, and in Lacoste, France. Online programs are offered through SCAD e-Learning.
The college offers 30 major areas of study: advertising design, animation, architectural history, architecture, art history, broadcast design and motion graphics, cinema studies, commercial photography, digital photography, documentary photography, fashion, fibers, film and television, furniture design, graphic design, historic preservation, illustration, illustration design, industrial design, interactive design and game development, interior design, media and performing arts, metals and jewelry, painting, photography, production design, sequential art, sound design, urban design, and visual effects. Minors are offered in each of the major programs as well as in accessory design, creative writing, cultural landscape, dance, decorative arts, drawing, electronic design, exhibition design, interaction design, marine design, museum studies, music performance, new media art, printmaking, sculpture, technical direction and urban design and development.
The college opened in 1979 with one building, Poetter Hall, and 71 students. Today, the campus includes 60-plus facilities and more than 7,350 students. The Savannah location offers a full university experience in one of the largest and most renowned National Historic Landmark districts in the United States. The Atlanta facility is strictly state-of-the-art and situated in the fast-paced professional marketplace of a major metropolitan hub for business, the arts and transportation. The Lacoste campus is nestled in a picturesque hillside setting amid a medieval village in Provence, allowing immersion into French culture, art and design.
Popular majors include animation, architecture, film and television, graphic design and photography. Class size is small, allowing each student the opportunity to receive individual attention. Each professor is uniquely qualified -- professionally and academically -- in his or her field. The international faculty and student body come from each of the 50 states and from more than 80 countries.
International students receive extensive orientation and ongoing assistance through the International Student Services Office, helping them adjust to life and education in another culture. A health clinic attends to the medical needs of students so that they may fully enjoy their educational experience. An active Intercultural Student Association involves students in many social activities, including trips and art festivals. A strong English as a second language program equips students to successfully complete their education in the United States and learn new technologies designed to make them more competitive and marketable in the global marketplace.
Campus facilities are equipped with the latest technology available. Students have access to classrooms, studios, an extensive art and architecture library, computer labs, darkrooms, processing labs and editing and postproduction suites. A book and art supply store, restaurants and galleries are conveniently located. The college also provides a fitness center as well as a selection of residence halls, which offer dining facilities or kitchens.
ESL Program
The Savannah College of Art and Design offers a multilevel English as a Second Language program for non-native speakers of English. This course of study has made admission to the Savannah College of Art and Design possible for talented international students who have a need for more proficiency in the English language. ESL instruction also is available for those who would like to improve their English skills without enrolling full time in the academic programs of the college.
The ESL program is staffed by teachers who hold one or more advanced degrees in education, English, linguistics, international studies or related fields. Most ESL instructors have taught in Asia, Europe, Africa or the Middle East and have knowledge of more than one language and culture.
